Pool Play Schedule Generator

Pool play is useful when a tournament has too many teams for a full round robin. Instead of every team playing every other team, teams are divided into smaller groups called pools. Each pool plays its own schedule, then top teams can advance to playoffs or medal games.

When to use pool play

Use pool play when:

• You have more teams than a full round robin can handle.
• You want every team to play several games before elimination.
• You need standings to determine playoff seeds.
• You have multiple courts or fields.

Pool play is common in volleyball, soccer, basketball, pickleball, esports, school competitions, and community tournaments.

Tips for fair pool play

Keep pools as balanced as possible. Avoid putting all strongest teams in one pool unless that is intentional. If teams are seeded, distribute seeds across pools. If teams are random, clearly state that the pools were randomized.
