How to Track Scores and Standings

Learn simple ways to track tournament scores, standings, wins, losses, points, and playoff seeds.

How to Track Scores and Standings

Scores and standings should be easy to record, easy to update, and easy to explain. Confusion around standings can create more frustration than the schedule itself.

Decide the standings method first

Before games begin, decide how standings are calculated.

Common systems include:

  • wins and losses
  • points for wins, ties, and losses
  • set or game differential
  • point differential
  • points allowed
  • head-to-head result

Keep a master standings sheet

One person or table should maintain the official standings. If multiple people update different copies, mistakes become more likely.

Score reporting workflow

  1. Game ends.
  2. Scorekeeper confirms final score with both teams.
  3. Score is recorded on score sheet.
  4. Standings are updated.
  5. Public standings are posted or refreshed.

Tip

Use simple tiebreakers unless your sport or league requires a specific system. The more complicated the tiebreaker, the more clearly it must be explained before the tournament starts.
