How to Schedule a Volleyball Tournament

Volleyball tournaments often use pool play because it gives teams several matches before playoffs. The schedule needs to handle courts, match length, warmups, work teams, standings, and playoff seeding.

Common volleyball tournament structure

• Morning pool play
• Short break
• Playoff or crossover matches
• Semifinals/finals or placement matches

Scheduling considerations

Courts

List courts clearly. If one court is the main court, decide whether finals should be there.

Match length

Volleyball matches can be scheduled by time slot or by best-of format. Timed pool play is easier to schedule, but official events may require set formats.

Work teams

Some volleyball tournaments require non-playing teams to ref, score, line judge, or work the table. Add work assignments directly to the schedule when possible.

Rest

Avoid giving one team several consecutive matches. If unavoidable, make it visible and keep it balanced.
