How to Assign Teams to Courts Fairly

Court assignments can affect how fair a tournament feels. Even when courts are technically equal, teams notice if they stay on one court all day or constantly move across the venue.

What fairness can mean

Court fairness may include:

• similar number of games on each court
• reasonable movement between courts
• avoiding one team always getting the “main” court
• avoiding constant back-and-forth movement
• keeping pools organized when needed

When fixed courts make sense

Sometimes a pool should stay on one court because it is simpler for volunteers and spectators. This is common when each court has its own score table.

When rotation makes sense

Court rotation makes sense when courts are equivalent and teams expect equal exposure. It can also prevent one court from feeling like the “bad court.”

Practical schedule review

After generating a schedule, count how many times each team appears on each court. If one team has a strange pattern, adjust before publishing.

Public schedule tip

Use clear names such as “Court 1 - Main Gym” instead of just numbers if the venue may be confusing.
